The majority the stewardesses are from small towns. It’s supposed to be one of the nicest professions for a woman — if she can’t be a model or in the movies. All the great benefits: flying around the world and meeting all those people.
When people ask you what you’re doing and you say "stewardess", you’re really proud, you think it’s great. It’s like a stepping’stone. The first two months I started flying I had already been to London, Paris and Rome. But after you started working, it’s not as glamorous as you thought it was going to be.
We had to go to stew school for five weeks. We’d go through a whole week of make-up and poise. I didn’t like this. They make you feel like you’ve never been out in public. At one time they wouldn’t let us wear false eyelashes and false fingernails! Now it’s required that you wear false eyelashes, and if you do not have the right length nails, you wear false nails. Everything is supposed to be becoming to the passenger.
You do meet a lot of movie stars and a lot of political people.
Stewardesses are impressed only by name people. But a normal millionaire that you don’t know doesn’t make an impression on you. The only thing that really thrills a stewardess are passengers like Kennedy or movie stars or some political celebrities.
I think our average age is 26. But our supervisors tell us what kind of make-up to wear, what kind of lipstick to wear, if our hair is not the right style for us, if we were not smiling enough. They even tell us how to act when you’re on a pass. You’re not supposed to walk off with a passenger, hand in hand. After you get out of terminal that’s all yours.
They say you can spot a stewardess by the way she wears her make-up. At one time all had short hair and everybody had it cut in stew school exactly alike. At one time they told us we couldn’t wear anything one inch above the knees.
It’s different now.
Wigs used to be forbidden. Now it’s the style. Now it’s permissible for nice women to wear wigs, eyelashes and false fingernails.
The other day I had 55 minutes to serve 101 couch passengers, cocktail and full-meal service. You do it fast and terrible. You’re very rude. You don’t mean to be rude — you just don’t have time to answer the questions. You smile and you just ignore them. You get three drink orders in a hurry. There’s been many times when you miss the glass pouring, and you pour it in the man’s lap. You just don’t say "I’m sorry". You give him a cloth and you keep going. That’s the bad part of the job.
Doctors tell stewardesses they’re gonna get wrinkles all over their faces because they smile with their mouths and their eyes.

Cellular phones, one of the greatest inventions in the late 20 th century, now have become the newest addiction in the world. Since the smart phone is invented, more and more people are addicted to its entertaining system. Even through cell phone is quite important for many different field of professions, entertainment of mobile phone is now overstep its basic needed in daily life.

Mobile entertainment system comprises a range of activities associated with mobile electronics except its basic mobile telecommunication; data transmission and texting messages. Everything you play within your cell phone could be a entertainment software, such as games, social networking (e.g. twitter, facebook, skype) and Photo & Video software. Some people even called cell phone “the newest cigarette”, for seeing how people playing with it at once while they have a break. For instance, a Korean university student who named Lee owns two cell phones, why? Because he uses his best phone only for playing mobile games, which immediately reject the original propose for cell phone that is to reduce the equips you carry around with you.(1)

A new study found that a third of people are willing to give up a week of sex than their cell phone.(2) Of course cell phone is important to some of people because of their job, polices; stockbrokers or doctors might have a great loss if they miss a phone call, cell phone rise their working efficiency obviously, however, is it really important for students that hold a cell phone all day long? It’s reasonable that they would like to contact their family and friends, but if you spend 5 hours staring the screen every day, you must be addicted to your phone.

It is believe that cell phone has greater advantages than its disadvantages, and we shouldn’t stop to use cell phone as a popular communication tool. But when cell phone addiction grows stronger and stronger, people would eventually realize how serious it is. My theory of this essay would be cell phone addiction is becoming the newest addiction and even a global issue that everyone should pay attention to it.

Raising population of cell phone addiction

From a historical perspective, cell phone addiction was showed up at many magazines and newspaper since the smart phone was invented, iphone and blackberry is too popular to resist. Even President Obama was said to be addicted to his Blackberry.(3) Nevertheless, there is some arguments point out that people only use mobile phone for contacting and researching, even though sometimes they went to social networking is just for relaxed, there is no need to be worried about cell phone addiction could have the bad affect to people. In fact, people now are not only using cell phone for calling or texting, also, even the more of them are using cell phone to play games. According to Keith Stuart, who is the famous reporter from the Guardian newspaper, said, “There are over 14 million out of 37 million cell phone subscribers in Korea play mobile games. To put it another way, four out of every 10 people are mobile gamers. More specifically, 2.3 million play mobile games every day, accounting for 6.2 percent of the total cell phone subscribers, including 15 percent of cell phone users in their teens and twenties.”(4) We can see how high the rate of mobile game addicts is. People in 21 st century are using more time to play games instead of doing regular calling, most of them are teenagers, they are young and passion, once they are attacked by the new technology, they could no longer be controlled, going to deep to the mobile games would definitely harm you, the same as gambling and drug, they might lost the ability to pull themselves out.

Cell phone addiction in family relationship

Even so cell phone addiction does exist and affecting us right now, some journalist don not agree with that it would deeply affect our normal life. Instead, they believe that we shouldn’t be worried about the addiction, we can fix it easily. The author of “It’s a Jetsons World: Private Miracles and Public Crimes”,(5) Jeffrey Tucker is one of the modern technology supporter. He has a theory that modern technology has us all talking to each other, raise our relationship, it can’t be a bad thing. However, cell phone addiction could somehow hurt our relationship, not just for random people, even for couples. Psychology Today, a popular magazine has an article about this topic.(6) A husband of a female patient sent an email to psychology PhD Guy Winch. It talks about the symptom of his wife, she has to put her cell phone beside her every moment, no matter what she’s doing, either watching TV or doing the dishes, she has to play with her phone, also, she’s becoming very fractious, sensitive and stubborn. It really lowers their life quality. Therefore he wrote this email asked for helped. Winch gives him some suggestions to help his wife, in the end, he especially mentions that cell phone addiction could turn into a serious mental disease that we all should be very careful. In a word, cell phone addiction isn’t a piece of cake, if you find yourself sink into your phone, you probably better go see a professional counselor.

The relation of road accidents and cell phone addiction

Multi-functional cell phone has given us convenient; pleasure and technology. However, it doesn’t mean it has no negative effect. Mobile phone addiction, “the newest cigarette” in the world, has perplexed many people’s life quality and the relationship with others. No matter how helpful the cell phone is, we cannot ignore it’s bad impact to human-being. In conclusion, cell phone addiction is more dangerous than you thought, while you enjoy playing with its entertainment software, never treat your phone lightly that it consumes your soul in the end.

Cell phone addiction may not be an official psychological diagnosis just yet (as of the DSM-5), however it functions very similarly to gambling addiction.

Technology addiction expert, Dr. David Greenfield, refers to smartphones as “the world’s smallest slot machine.” He explains that smartphones, just like slot machines, operate on a variable reinforcement schedule. “Every once in a while you get a reward… a piece of information, a text, an email, an update… something comes through that you find salient or pleasurable, but you don’t know when you’re going to get it, what it’s going to be and how good it’s going to be.” This is exactly the same reinforcement schedule as a slot machine. What’s highly addictive about these things is the idea and the neurobiological expectation they set up that a reward is coming, but you don’t know when you’re going to get it.

Each of these little rewards, such as texts, likes, social media updates, trigger a dopamine release. Dopamine controls the pleasure centers in our brain. When this chemical is released, it feels good and makes us want more of whatever is boosting our dopamine levels. It’s the reason why we seek out more food and more sex. It’s also the reason why responding to one quick text message so often turns into a fifteen-minute time-suck of scrolling through internet memes. It causes a dopamine loop.

Dr. Susan Weinschenk explains this process clearly:

“With the internet, twitter, and texting you now have almost instant gratification of your desire to seek. Want to talk to someone right away? Send a text and they respond in a few seconds. Want to look up some information? Just type your request into google… It’s easy to get in a dopamine induced loop. Dopamine starts you seeking, then you get rewarded for the seeking which makes you seek more. It becomes harder and harder to stop looking at email, stop texting, or stop checking your cell phone to see if you have a message or a new text.”

No wonder, so many of us are mindlessly overusing our devices.

While all of us are vulnerable to our smartphones’ dopamine loops and many of us are compulsively turning to our devices, most of us likely wouldn’t meet the criteria for being considered an actual addict.

Dr. Greenfield emphasizes that addiction is a combination of two things. First of all, addiction involves an abuse or dependency on a substance or behavior (in this case technology use) that is “beyond your control and outside the realm of reasonable use.” Secondly, “and most importantly,” Dr. Greenfield says it must be “impacting your life in some negative way, whether it be your home life, work, school, economics or social relationships.”

Furthermore, these other ingredients are necessary in order meet the criteria for addiction:

  • Increased Tolerance: Needing more time on your phone, updated technology or new apps to get your fix.
  • Withdrawal: Feeling ill at ease or anxious when you are away from your phone.
  • Mood Altering: Using technology to alter your mood or change your state of mind. For example, sending out a bunch of texts when you feel a bit down or turning to an iPhone game when you feel anxious.

Whether you meet the criteria for a full-blown phone addiction or simply want to reduce your emotional dependency on technology, there are lots of helpful strategies for breaking this bad habit.

Outsmart your smartphone by using technology to limit your technology use. Want to use your phone less? There’s an app for that. In fact, there are LOTS of apps for that. The BreakFree app, for instance monitors your phone usage, tallying up the number of times your unlock the screen, how many minutes hours you spend on your phone, which apps you use the most. The app then gives you a daily addiction score. If your addiction score alone isn’t motivation enough to make you think twice before using your phone, the app also allows you to set up notifications to alert you when you’ve been on your phone for an extended period of time or opened an app too many times.

Get your phone out of the bedroom. There are lots of reasons why you should not sleep with your phone. For starters, using your phone within an hour of bedtime leads to poorer sleep quality and more insomnia. If you’re like me and you check your phone every time you wake up in the night, your sleep is even more negatively impacted. Furthermore, when you wake up and check your phone before getting out of bed, you are reinforcing the habit for the rest of the day. Buy a cheap alarm clock and stop sleeping with your phone by your side.

Put yourself on a digital diet. The same way reducing your waistline involves breaking unhealthy habits and eating more mindfully, reducing your screen time requires similar self-control. When you want to lose weight, you have to stop eating the junk food. When you want to cut back on smartphone use, you have to stop using the junk apps. Delete those deliciously addictive games. Cut back on social networks the way a nutritionist might suggest you cut back on carbs. Quitting technology cold turkey isn’t a realistic option for most people, so this requires some real will-power. Temporarily (if not permanently) deleting your most frequently used apps can be a huge help.

Set up a digital schedule. Assign certain chunks of time throughout the day to go phone free. Experiment with leaving your phone at home when you go to dinner with your friends. Turn your phone off for a couple hours every day at the office so you can work without distraction. Leave your phone in the other room in the evenings in order to spend more quality time with your partner or children.

Get drastic with a digital detox. If you are open to trying something more extreme, Daniel Sieberg, author of The Digital Diet: The 4-Step Plan to Break Your Tech Addiction and Regain Balance in Your Life, suggests doing a full “digital detox,” where you spend an entire weekend with ZERO access to technology. Notify your loved ones in advance, power your devices off and stick them in a box or a bottom drawer, and ask a trusted friend to temporarily change your passwords to reduce temptation. After the detox, Sieberg suggests reintroducing technology slowly. He swears that a digital diet does wonders for reconnecting with the real world and improving relationships.
